Frequently asked questions: Trusts & Foundations

What does a trustee do?

A trustee manages assets transferred to them in a trust, in the interests of the beneficiaries and in line with the rules of the trust deed. Trusts are often used for succession and wealth planning across generations.

Do trustees in Switzerland need a licence?

Yes. Since the Financial Institutions Act (FinIA), trustees have needed authorisation from FINMA and are supervised by a supervisory organisation.

What is wealth planning?

Wealth planning structures assets legally and for tax purposes for the future, for example with trusts, foundations, companies or marriage and inheritance contracts. The aim is an orderly transfer to the next generation.
