Frequently asked questions: Fiduciary & Tax

What does a fiduciary do in Switzerland?

Fiduciary firms keep the books, prepare annual financial statements and tax returns, handle payroll and VAT, and advise on company formation and succession. Many serve both businesses and private individuals.

Is a fiduciary (Treuhänder) the same as a trustee?

No. A fiduciary in the Swiss sense provides accounting, tax and advisory services. A trustee manages assets held in a trust and needs authorisation from FINMA to do so. You will find trustees in the «Trusts & Foundations» category.

Does a fiduciary need a licence?

Not at federal level; the canton of Ticino, however, requires a cantonal licence. Federal diplomas and certificates and membership of a professional association such as TREUHAND|SUISSE or EXPERTsuisse are recognised marks of quality.
