Frequently asked questions: Insurance
What does private client insurance cover that standard household insurance does not?
Standard household contents insurance is designed for average values and usually caps cover for jewellery, art and collections at fixed amounts. Solutions for wealthier private clients can insure such items at agreed values, include transport and loans to exhibitions, and combine homes, vehicles and liability in one contract. Scope and terms vary from provider to provider.
How are insurers and insurance brokers supervised in Switzerland?
Insurance companies are supervised by FINMA. Since the revised Insurance Supervision Act (ISA) came into force on 1 January 2024, non-tied insurance intermediaries, including independent brokers, must be entered in FINMA's register of insurance intermediaries. Disputes can be referred to the Ombudsman of Private Insurance and Suva; participation is voluntary.
When is life insurance used in wealth and estate planning?
Some families hold assets within a life insurance policy, for example with a provider in Liechtenstein, and designate the beneficiaries in it. Whether such a solution is suitable depends on residence, tax situation, family circumstances and inheritance law, and should be reviewed with specialists.
