What is private equity?
Private equity means holdings in companies that are not traded on a stock exchange. Funds invest over several years, develop the companies and then sell the holdings. Venture capital is the form used for young growth companies.
Can private investors invest in private equity?
Yes, but with restrictions: many private equity funds are open only to qualified investors, such as high-net-worth private clients who have opted out under FinSA. There are also funds of funds, semi-liquid funds and listed private equity companies.
How long is the capital tied up?
Often ten years or more: classic private equity funds frequently run for ten years or longer, and an early exit is usually not possible. Private equity is therefore only suitable for assets you will not need for a long time.
