Frequently asked questions: Family Office

What is a family office?

A family office coordinates a family's entire wealth: securities, real estate, holdings, art and foundations, plus reporting, tax, administration and succession. A single-family office works for one family, a multi-family office for several.

What level of assets makes a family office worthwhile?

A multi-family office is usually an option for larger, complex fortunes, often from a sum in the tens of millions; a dedicated single-family office only for considerably higher wealth. The thresholds vary from provider to provider.

Does a family office need a licence?

It depends. In Switzerland, a single-family office that serves only one family generally does not need a licence. A multi-family office may need one depending on its activities, for example as an asset manager under FinIA.
